Iraqi Ministry of Health officials today said 77 Iraqis were killed and 70 were wounded in heavy fighting in Najaf overnight. The dead included six Iraqi police officers. U.S. and Iraqi forces Friday resumed offensive operations outside the city's Imam Ali Mosque where fighters loyal to Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr are holed up.
